Daniel Lledó – CHEF & SOMMELIER
Award-winning Chef & Sommelier Danny Lledó is the owner/partner of Slate Wine Bar in upper Georgetown, Washington, DC. His culinary directive is influenced by his Mediterranean heritage as his father is also an accomplished chef from Denia with cooking is in his blood. Lledó also honed his restaurant skills working at some top Spanish restaurants for José Andrés’ Think Food Group, Taberna del Alabardero and Botin (known for being the world’s oldest restaurant). A master of making paella, his awards include Best Paella at the Paella Wine & Beer Festival in Los Angeles, California in October 2016, People’s Choice Paella at the Paella Wine & Beer Festival in Orange County, California, on August 2017 and Best Valencian Paella at the Paella Wine & Beer in San Diego in May 2018. Lledó’s wins have garnered more invitations for him to compete internationally, including being a Finalist at Paella Valenciana de Sueca International Competition coming in September 2018.
Lledó’s cooking resonates with guests and colleagues alike as he is as comfortable working the kitchen line as presiding over a board meeting or leading a wine tasting. His Portuguese and Spanish heritage, coupled with his passion for food, wine and hospitality complements his other talent—a strong background in finance.
A graduate of the University of Maryland in College Park, Lledó worked for three years in the financial industry, creating his own consulting company, VLC Advisory. He consulted on business ventures, real estate transactions, and the hospitality industry—specializing in restaurants. This drew him back into his first love—serving quality food to guests. He eventually decided to return his family vocation, in which he now has over a decade of experience. In 2012, Lledó made the transition to restaurant owner and managing director of Fancy Hospitality, purchasing his first restaurant Crush Kitchen & Winehouse in Annapolis, Maryland. A formerly struggling business, he turned it into a successful venture.
Then in 2013, he took over management of Slate Wine Bar + Bistro in the Glover Park neighborhood. This casual restaurant is supported by loyal clientele that are devoted to Lledó for expanding their knowledge of wine, while providing welcoming service and consistently delicious fare. Slate regularly hosts wine tastings and educational opportunities to explore the exceptional wine list this intimate scale oasis has amassed. It is regarded by those who know it as a small gathering place with a spectacular wine list. Lledó also proudly supports the Vicent Ferrer Foundation USA, Chefs for Equality, The Humane Society, and Capital Breast Care Center.
